Somic originally started PVC coating in Lancashire in the 1960s as a way of finishing their own paper weaves to produce waterproof and wipe clean floormats. As the years went on, Somic soon noticed a new demand for wipe clean coated tablecloths, and commission coating for customers’ own fabrics began.

The popularity of wipe clean tablecloths grew immensely over the following 40 years as up and coming designers such as Cath Kidston approached Somic to complement their fabrics with a PVC coating; this would later be marketed as oilcloth.

Somic can coat most fabrics, including printed fabrics, cottons, polyester, carbon fibre, felt, stitchbond, mattress ticking and more.

As well as our traditional gloss (shiny) and more subtle matt finishes, Somic has the capability to apply many other embosses and can coat using any colour of PVC, which can also be Pantone colour matched if required. We also offer a number of different coatings as detailed in our list below.

Somic has four large hot-melt coating machines giving us the flexibility and ability to run multiple lines and finishes/embosses at the same time.
